Aircraft serial number lookup: find and verify an FAA registration
Use the official FAA Serial Number Inquiry for a manufacturer serial number. Compare the returned manufacturer and model before using an N-number in Aerovidence. The serial number and tail number serve different purposes and should not be substituted for each other.

Where to search by manufacturer serial number
The FAA provides a separate Serial Number Inquiry. Copy the serial exactly as documented, review the results and retain the official reference and search date. Aerovidence’s public lookup searches by N-number; it does not provide a separate serial-search database.

Compare the full aircraft identity
The FAA defines a serial number as assigned by the manufacturer or builder. A serial string alone does not establish a match across unrelated manufacturers, models or document errors. Compare the actual data plate and supporting documents with each candidate entry.
| Identity field | Check before continuing |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer or builder | Compare the named entity in the record with the aircraft documents. |
| Model | Keep exact source labels and resolve incompatible variants. |
| Serial number | Preserve prefixes, suffixes and punctuation from the original. |
| N-number and dates | Document the interval in which the mark described this airframe. |

Use the resolved N-number for the public report
Once the identity is supported, enter its documented N-number in the free lookup. Compare the report’s source edition and identity fields again. An aircraft’s N-number can change; a historical event still needs date and identity evidence before it can be associated with the airframe.

When no candidate can be verified
Keep the result unresolved. Ask the seller for legible aircraft documents and reconcile discrepancies with an appropriate professional or official source. Do not manufacture a serial-to-registration link from a similar model name, and do not interpret an unresolved search as a favorable history.
